A broad-scale global array of temperature/salinity profiling floats, known as Argo, is forming a major component of the ocean observing system, with deployments that began in 2000 and are ongoing. For the first time, the physical state of the upper ocean will be systematically measured and assimilated in near real-time.

Aviso Altimetry

Distributes satellite altimetry data from Topex/Poseidon, Jason-1, ERS-1 and ERS-2, and EnviSat, and Doris precise orbit determination and positioning products. Data are used to study ocean dynamics and geophysics in climate prediction, monitoring of mean sea level, global warming, El Niño and La Niña events, marine currents and ocean circulation, and marine modeling.
